Davis Cup 2021, Semifinals: Serbia was facing Croatia in the Semifinals of the Davis Cup finals where even after Djokovic’s best effort fails to hold Croatia. World No. 1 this time too as the Quarterfinals did the double duty but it was not enough.
Earlier in the quarterfinals of Davis Cup finals 2021, Novak Djokovic won his singles and doubles against Kazakhstan. Against the former World No. 3 Marin Cilic, Novak made a good start but in the doubles, it was a different story.
The singles went on for one hour and 39 minutes against Cilic. In which he hit 13 winners and fended off all eight break points to overpower the Croatian 6-4, 6-2.
“It was always going to be a tough match against Marin,” Djokovic said in his on-court interview. “The first set was over an hour, with some very close games. I saved myself. Winning the first set gave me a lot of confidence for the second set. It was a nervy start for both of us, we both knew the significance of this match.”
The Croatian team was given an early lead by Borna Gojo who defeated Dusan Lajovic in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 that took two hours and one minute of the clock. The 23-year-old, who has also beaten Alexei Popyrin and Lorenzo Sonego in this event, won 77 percent (36/47) of his first-serve points to triumph.
