WTA 500, Sydney Tennis Classic 2022: The fourth seed Anett Kontaveit cruises past Elena-Gabriela Ruse in a straight-set battle, 6-3, 6-1. It took one hour and 16 minutes for Anett to over the Romanian.
Anett Kontaveit: “I’m very happy with the win,” Kontaveit said in her post-match press conference. “First it was a little tougher, but then I felt like I got my game going a little bit more and I felt like I was playing better as the match went on.”
The ending of the 2021 season has been one of its kind for Anett Kontaveit, winning 29 of her last 33 matches, including four WTA singles titles too. So far, the 2022 season is also looking great for her as she wins the first two in straight sets.
Although, her opponent too had a great success late in the last season taking her inside the top 100 in WTA rankings. However, the Estonian was well prepared to eliminate Ruse.
It was the Romanian who took the early lead at 2-0 but at 3-2, Anett found herself in touch and won the last four games to take the first set in style.
Ruse staved off three break points to hold serve in the opening game of the second set, but that would be her last mark on the scoreboard as Kontaveit claimed six games in a row to seal the victory. Kontaveit won 65 percent of points off of the Ruse second serve in the clash.
Next up in the quarterfinals is the World No.10 Ons Jabeur of Tunisia as she overcame Petra Kvitova for the first time. Kontaveit’s season-ending run in 2021 qualified her for the year-end Akron WTA Finals Guadalajara at the expense of Jabeur, and the pair have enjoyed good-natured banter about it ever since.
