Crystal Palace clinch their first win of the season, with a terrific 3-0 success over Tottenham, after Zaha converted from the penalty spot and Edouard scored a brace on his debut. Romelu Lukaku scores first goal at Stamford Bridge.
Palace dominated much of the game and had numerous chances to break the deadlock, with Gallagher and Mitchell both going close. The main turning point happened just before the hour mark, when Tanganga was sent off for a second yellow card and Spurs had to play the rest of the match with 10 men. Davies then gave away a penalty and Zaha converted it to 76 minutes, before Edouard came off the bench to grab two goals and make it 3-0.
It was a hard day for Tottenham Hotspur yesterday as Crystal Palace was the one to dominate the game and win. With 63% of the possession, it looked hard for Tottenham to win. And after the red card, it looked harder for them. Tottenham could only take 2 shots in the whole match and only 1 of them was on target to test the keeper.
After being undefeated in their first 3 matches Tottenham tasted defeat and was forced down 6th placed by Crystal Palace. Zaha stepped up for his team to score a goal from a penalty and the dream day for the substitute Odsonne Edouard to come off the bench and score 2 magnificent goals.
Crystal Palace has enjoyed their joint biggest Premier League win in a London derby, following two other 3-0 victories against Spurs in January 2005 and Arsenal in April 2017.
Tottenham has won just one of their four Premier League games when starting the day top of the table, losing each of the last two at Liverpool in December 2020 and Palace today.
Crystal Palace striker Odsonne Edouard is only the fourth player in Premier League history to score more than once as a substitute on their debut in the competition, and first since Sergio Agüero for Manchester City (v Swansea) back in August 2011.
Odsonne Edouard after his debut goals:
“It’s a dream debut for me. I waited a long, long time for this, and I’m very happy to score for the first win in front of the fans,” he told the club’s official website.
“I didn’t believe it… I need to enjoy it and for sure I’ll watch again my goals tonight. I’m very happy.
“(The manager) said, ‘Help the team, make a lot of runs behind. Try to help the team defensively and play as you do well’. So after I came on I wanted to score and help the team.
“It’s good I scored two goals and I’ll enjoy tonight, but tomorrow I go back to work.
“I want to work hard for next week and now this game is finished I want to forget and work hard for a good performance again.”
