The Wimbledon final was an exciting one to watch. World no 1 Novak Djokovic and the Italian Matteo Berrettini went head to head. Novak Djokovic has won the title 5 times, from which 4 times he has defeated Roger Federer in the finals. He was looking for his 6th title. Winning this he will tie Roger Federer’s 20 grand slams.
The game started with set 1 going to the tiebreakers. In which Matteo Berrettini won with a scoreline of 6-7(4-7). Novak winning the 2nd set 6-4, showing his power. It was then all Novak Djokovic show. Winning set 3 with 6-4 games. And set 4 with 6-3 games. He has proven a lot throughout his career but now we can say he is in the talk of being one of the greatest. this game also saw 1st women chair umpire in a Wimbledon final. Watch highlights.
Ashleigh Barty defeats Karolina Pliskova to win her maiden grand slam.
In the women singles, it was Ashleigh Barty defeating Karolina Pliskova to claim the title. 1st set was one-sided with 6-3 in Barty’s favor. Pliskova putting some fight won the 2nd set in the tiebreaker 6-7(4-7). Going into the decided Ashleigh Barty world no 1 showed her skills to take the set 6-3. It’s the first Wimbledon title for Ashleigh Barty. Also her first major grand slam. Both the world no 1 lived up to the expectation. Karolina Pliskova was playing in her first Wimbledon final. She put up a good fight but Barty was rock solid on the other end.
The post-match interview showed how tough mentally is Novak Djokovic.
“Not taking the title win for granted. It’s special for me.”
When asked how does it feel to level 20 grand slams record with Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, he replies ” it means none of us three will stop. I have mentioned it many times and I have to tribute to them. They are legends of our sport. They two are the most important players I ever faced in my career. Where I am today is because of them. They have helped me realized what I need to do to improve mentally, physically, and tactically. When I first broke into the(world) top 10, I lost for 3 to 4 years all the big matches against these two guys and something shifted at the end of 2010 and the beginning of 2011. The last ten years is an incredible journey which is not stopping here.”
What is next in the bag? It’s the calendar grand slam, right?
“Well, I can definitely envision that to be happening. I hoping and definitely give it a shot. I am in great form and playing well. Playing best tennis in the grand slam is my top priority right now at this stage of my career. So let’s keep it going.”
Novak on his thoughts about his team.
“My team and my friends and my family, particularly my wife and my kids and my brothers couldn’t come this year to witness this incredible tournament. I love you guys. Thank you for sacrificing your time, your energy, and Willing to share the journey with me. We are part of an individual sport but it is the team effort at the end of the day. They see me in different colors every single day is a different day. It’s very unpredictable what’s going to happen. I really appreciate their passion and devotion to the sport. Thank you.”
