Tokyo Olympics Tennis: Finals update for all tennis events.

Novak Djokovic fails to deliver. After losing the semis he lost the bronze medal match too. A bronze and gold for B. Bencic.

Men’s single’s Final.

A. Zevrev (Greece) vs K. Khachanov (ROC): (Gold Medal Match)

It was an easy win for Zevrev as he crushed Khachanov in straight sets. Khachanov was no competition for Zevrev. He was hot from the start. In the first set, Zevrev got better of the Russian [ 6-3 ]. It was a similar story or even a stronger second set from Zevrev winning it [ 6-1 ].

N. Djokovic (Serbia) vs P. Carreno (Spain): (Bronze Medal Match)

N. Djokovic was again disappointed with his performance in this match. P. Carreno shattered the world no 1 in the first set to win [ 6-4 ]. The second set was more competitive as Novak had to take the game to the decider. He did so taking the set in the tie break to win ( 6-8 ) in his favor. Novak was struggling with his shoulder as he was unable to match Carreno and losing the third set and the match [ 6-3 ]. A good performance indeed by the Spaniard.

Women’s single’s Final.

B. Bencic (Switzerland) vs M. Vondrousova (Czech Republic): (Gold Medal Match)

B. Bencic was all over M. Vondrousova from the start. But Vondrousova responded well by playing competitive tennis. Bencic took the first set [ 7-5 ]. Vondrousova responded by winning the second set comprehensively [ 2-6 ]. But the final set was all Bencic getting better of Vondrousova [ 6-3 ]. Bencic was very emotional after winning the match. It was a wonderful moment.

E. Svitolina (Ukraine) vs E. Rybakina (Kazakhstan): (Bronze Medal Match)

It was the bronze medal match that had plenty of ups and downs. The first set was a blowout for Svitolina as Rybakina winning the set [ 6-1 ]. However, the second set went to the tiebreaker which Svitolina was able to convert ( 7-5 ). Svitolina using the momentum stormed into the 3rd set with a scoreline of [ 6-4 ]. It was a well-deserved bronze medal for Svitolina.

Men’s doubles Final.

N. Mektic and M. Pavic (Croatia) vs M. Cilic and I. Dodig (Croatia): (Gold Medal)

It was all Croatian finals. Whoever wins eventually the medal will go to Croatia. Mektic and Pavic started the first set with confidence. Eventually winning the set with [ 6-4 ]. M. Cilic and I. Dodig, the senior pair, come back stronger taking the second set [ 3-6 ]. The tiebreaker was a bit off for Cilic and Dodig. Mektic and Pavic took the tiebreaker and the match ( 10-6 ). Superb match.

M. Venus and M. Daniell (New Zealand) vs A. Krajicek and T. Sandgren (USA): (Bronze Medal)

Both teams were on their toes from the start. Not giving easy points to the opponents. The first set went to the tiebreaks and New Zealand comes out on top ( 7-3 ). The second set however was pretty straightforward [ 6-2 ] in New Zealand’s favor. It would have been fun if the match had gone to the tiebreakers.

Women’s Doubles Finals.

K. Siniakova and B. Krejcikova (Czech Republic) vs V. Golubic and B. Bencic (Switzerland): (Gold Medal)

Bencic was again in action in the women’s doubles. She and Golubic were up against Siniskova and Krejcikova, who was the favorite to win the gold. The first set looked entertaining with [ 7-5 ] in Czech Republican’s favor. In the second set, they showed why they are the favorite crushing the Swiss [ 6-1 ]. Another medal for Bencic.

L. Stefani and L. Pigossi (Brazil) vs E. Vesnina and V. Kudermetova (ROC): (Bronze Medal)

The match went to the decider. Both the team were well matched and it was who was better on that particular day. The first set went to ROC [ 4-6 ]. While Brazil taking the second set [ 6-4 ]. Tiebreaker also showed no difference between the two teams but eventually, Brazil took the gold with a score of ( 11-9 ).

Mixed Doubles Finals.

A. Rublev and A. Pavlyuchenkova (ROC) and A. Karatsev and E. Vesnina (ROC): (Gold Medal)

It was all ROC final. Rublev and Pavlyuchenkova took the first set [ 6-3 ]. While the second set went to the tiebreakers. Vesnina and Karatsev leveled the match winning the second set ( 5-7 ). The decider 3rd set tiebreakers were very much balanced. Rublev and Pavlyuchenkova finally broke their fellow opponents to win the gold.

J. Peers and A. Barty (Australia) vs N. Djokovic and N. Stojanovic (Serbia): (Bronze Medal)

The Australians were awarded a walkover because of Novak Djokovic’s shoulder injury. It was a bronze medal for Australia nevertheless.
