Both players have played incredibly amazing tennis so far. But the pressure of the semifinals is different. The Canadian was looking comfortable right from the start. He was looking in rhythm while serving and holding the first game.

However, Medvedev was not holding back either answering back strongly. The game was neck and neck at 3-3 when Medvedev had 3 breakpoints at hand. He converted the very first to take an early lead. The Russian was serving for the set and took it 6-4.

The second set was also competitive with both players winning their serves. The score was 2-2 with Auger serving with duece. It looked like Medvedev would break now but Auger skilfully held him back. In the very next game, Auger had series of opportunities to break. Which he eventually did. Auger was serving for the set when Medvedev answered the call. He took the game and came back all the way to take the set 7-5.

It was their second meeting, the first one was in 2018 at the Canadian Masters in the Round of 32. Medvedev had won the match there but with some strong hustle by Felix.

It was Medvedev’s determination as well as pressure for Auger which resulted in the set win. The third set was just a formality as Medvedev had the solution. The Russian did not give any easy and formal chance to the Canadian to take the set 6-2. It was an insane set from Medvedev.

US OPEN post match interview with Daniil Medvedev.

What made the difference?

“Yeah! I mean, strange match a little bit in the second set where I think everybody felt like it’s gonna be 1 set all and you never know where the match is gonna go. Managed to save the setpoints. He missed one volley, I made one good point and the match turned around completely. I mean I am just really happy. I don’t think I played my best today but I am really happy to be in the final on Sunday.”

Didyou have a sense when you broke serve saving those 3 points at 5-3 that the match was changing where you wanted it to go?

“When I won the game, During the game I didn’t feel it. (chuckles) Two set points, the only thing I was thinking don’t make ace on the line. Please! and I gonna make you play. And at 5-4, yeah I knew that now it’s a very important point of the match where I have to just do everything at my best even more than before because there’s the moment that I could break him mentally, and that is what happened.”
