US OPEN 2021: Round of 16 overviews. With Naomi Osaka, Ashleigh Barty out of the tournament many players are hoping to clinch the title to their name. In the men’s section, Novak Djokovic, Medvedev, Zverev shows no signs of stopping. The tournament has seen Tsitsipas face an upset in the 3rd round.
Round of 16: Men
Daniil Medvedev clear for the quarterfinal. He beat Dan Evans in straight sets across the court. Medvedev took the game by storm breaking his opponent’s serve 5 times from the 8 times he got the chance. His serving was also on another level with 84% win % on 1st serve. 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.
Lloyd Harris continue to impress as he beat another seeded opponent. It was the match of Aces. Harris with 36 aces and Reiley Opelka blasted 24 aces. However, first, serve win % for harris was 92% and he got way more breakpoint chances. Harris through in 4 sets, losing 1st and winning 3. (6-8), 6-4, 6-1, 6-3.
Alexander Zverev passes the Jannik Sinner test with full marks. He started the match with 2 identical set wins of 6-4. While the third set was competitive and went into the tiebreaker. Zverev hold his nerves and got better of Sinner (9-7). With Serving been above average as both players were not giving easy points.
Novak Djokovic wins again to advances into the quarterfinals. Novak started badly losing the first set 6-1. But it was not the end result, as Novak grabbed the game by its throat to put it to bed. The next three sets were nothing more than a formality. 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
Matteo Berrettini broke Oscar’s serve 4 times to take the game home. It was a four-set game. Matteo started by winning the first set 6-4. But stumbled in the second, to level the match with 3-6. He showed his class in the latter part of the match to clinch the match with dominant set wins. 6-3, 6-2.
Round of 16: Women
Simona Halep‘s US Open 2021 journey ends as Elina Svitolina snatches a straight-set victory. Svitolina having the upper hand in the H2H battle, dominated the game to beat Halep for the 6th time. 6-3, 6-3.
Belinda Bencic beats Iga Swiatek (14-12), 6-3. Nothing to separate the two in the first set. They were exchanging serves in the tiebreaker which eventually Bencic won. The second set was pretty straightforward as Bencic operated with authority. 6-3.
Nothing can Aryna Sabalenka not even Elise Mertens. With Barty and Naomi out, Aryna looks favorite to lift the US OPEN title. She just came and conquered the Belgium player with ease. A straight-set result of 6-4, 6-1.
Kerber faces a defeat with Leylah Annie Fernadez again the culprit. Noting much between the two to separate but Fernadez played a little bit better than Kerber. Kerber started by winning the first set but the effort Leylah gave in to the second set leveled the match. While the decider set was nothing much for Kerber. 4-6, (7-5), 6-2.
Emma Raducano, 18-year-old, reaches the quarterfinals beating Shelby Rogers in straight sets. She is ranked number 10 in Britain, soon to be number 1. She converted nearly every opportunity she got. Outscoring 40-16 in the service points won was the main difference here. 6-2, 6-1.
Karolina Pliskova through to the quarterfinals. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova was unable to match Karolina. It was a straight-set victory. An interesting stat in the match was Carolina’s first serve win % was zero. She still made it through, Amazing. 7-5, 6-4.
